Approximately Optimal Trees for Group Key Management with Batch Updates
نویسندگان
چکیده
We investigate the group key management problem for broadcasting applications. Previous work showed that, in handling key updates, batch rekeying can be more cost-effective than individual rekeying. One model for batch rekeying is to assume that every user has probability p of being replaced by a new user during a batch period with the total number of users unchanged. Under this model, it was recently shown that an optimal key tree can be constructed in linear time when p is a constant and in O(n) time when p → 0. In this paper, we investigate more efficient algorithms for the case p → 0, i.e., when membership changes are sparse. We design an O(n) heuristic algorithm for the sparse case and show that it produces a nearly 2-approximation to the optimal key tree. Simulation results show that its performance is even better in practice. We also design a refined heuristic algorithm and show that it achieves an approximation ratio of 1 + 2 for any fixed 2 > 0 and n, as p → 0. Finally, we give a different approximation algorithm for a general p which is shown to be quite good by our simulations.

We investigate the key management problem for broadcasting applications. Previous work showed that batch rekeying can be more cost-effective than individual rekeying. Constant bounds on both the branching degree and the subtree s...
متن کاملAsymptotically Optimal Tree-based Group Key Management Schemes
In key management schemes that realize secure multicast communications encrypted by group keys on a public network, tree structures are often used to update the group keys efficiently. Selçuk and Sidhu have proposed an efficient scheme which updates dynamically the tree structures based on the withdrawal probabilities of members. In this paper, it is shown that Selçuk-Sidhu scheme is asymptotic...
متن کاملModeling and analysis of intrusion detection integrated with batch rekeying for dynamic group communication systems in mobile ad hoc networks
We investigate performance characteristics of secure group communication systems (GCSs) in mobile ad hoc networks that employ intrusion detection techniques for dealing with insider attacks tightly coupled with rekeying techniques for dealing with outsider attacks. The objective is to identify optimal settings including the best intrusion detection interval and the best batch rekey interval und...
متن کاملOptimizing batch Rekeying interval for Secure Group Communication based on Queuing Model
Rapid growth of Internet spawns many group oriented multicast applications like Internet pay TV, news dissemination and stock quote system. The fortes of these applications are the support of dynamic, scalable group membership and group members are geographically divergent. As members of the group move in and out, an imperative cryptographic rekeying model should be applied to preserve the conf...
متن کاملA General Dynamic Function for the Basal Area of Individual Trees Derived from a Production Theoretically Motivated Autonomous Differential Equation
The management of forests may be motivated from production economic and environmental perspectives. The dynamically changing properties of trees affect environmental objectives and values of trees as raw material in the construction sector and in the energy sector. In order to optimize the management of forests, it is necessary to have access to reliable functions that predict how trees develop...
